Cuboidal Cells

Cuboidal cells are cube-shaped cells characterized by a roughly equal height and width, a centrally located nucleus, and an organization suited to lining and supporting tissues. In biology, they commonly form simple or stratified cuboidal epithelium, where apical-basal polarity, cell junctions, and membrane transport systems enable controlled secretion, absorption, and barrier formation. These cells line kidney tubules, glandular ducts, and other small passageways, helping modify fluids and transport substances between compartments. Their shape and arrangement provide useful clues in histology, while changes in cuboidal epithelia can inform studies of tissue structure, organ function, development, and disease.
