Cumulus Oocyte Complexes

Cumulus oocyte complexes are reproductive structures consisting of an oocyte surrounded by layers of specialized cumulus cells, which support oocyte growth and maturation. The cells communicate with the oocyte through gap junctions and exchange metabolites and regulatory signals; in response to hormonal cues, especially the luteinizing hormone surge, the cumulus layer expands and helps prepare the oocyte for ovulation and fertilization. In biology and reproductive research, cumulus oocyte complexes provide a model for studying follicle development, cell-to-cell communication, and developmental competence. They are also central to in vitro maturation, assisted reproductive technologies, and assessments of oocyte quality and fertility.
