Differentiation Induction

Differentiation induction is the directed process of prompting unspecialized cells, such as stem cells, to acquire the specialized characteristics and functions of a particular cell type. It works by exposing cells to defined chemical signals, growth factors, extracellular matrix conditions, or physical cues that activate lineage-specific gene regulatory networks and alter cell fate. In biology, researchers use differentiation induction to model embryonic development, generate specialized cells for disease studies and drug testing, and support tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Controlling the timing, concentration, and combination of inducing signals helps improve the consistency and functional maturity of the resulting cells.

Source: Heering, J., et al. Induction of Cellular Differentiation and Single Cell Imaging of Vibrio parahaemolyticus Swimmer and Swarmer Cells. J. Vis. Exp. (2017)This video demonstrates the induction of swarmer cell differentiation in Vibrio parahaemolyticus using a specially prepared agar medium. By manipulating environmental cues such as iron depletion, calcium supplementation, and surface contact, the bacteria are stimulated to transition from their swimmer form into elongated swarmer cells...

Source: Yong P. Chen, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, College of Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN This experiment will use inductive coils to demonstrate the concept of inductor and inductance. Magnetic induction will be demonstrated using a rod magnet inserted into or extracted away from the core of a coil to induce a transient electromotive force (emf) voltage in the coil, measured by a voltmeter. This experiment will also demonstrate the mutual inductance between...

University of Notre Dame, IN The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals ("The Guide") states that pain assessment and alleviation are integral components of the veterinary care of laboratory animals. The definition of anesthesia is the loss of feeling or sensation. It is a dynamic event involving changes in anesthetic depth with respect to an animal's metabolism, surgical stimulation, or variations in the...
