Growth Rate Control

Growth rate control is the regulation of how quickly biological systems increase in size, mass, or cell number, enabling coordinated development and maintenance of tissue function. Cells integrate signals from nutrient availability, hormones, growth factors, and stress to adjust biosynthesis, cell-cycle progression, and division, while feedback mechanisms limit growth when resources or space become restricted. In biology, studying growth rate control helps explain organismal development, tissue repair, microbial population dynamics, and disease states such as cancer. Measuring changes over time also supports comparisons of genetic, environmental, or pharmacological effects on growth.

Methods for Controlling Microbial Growth

2025

Microbial growth control refers to various methods employed to inhibit, reduce, or eliminate microorganisms to ensure safety and hygiene across different settings. These methods are categorized based on the target environment and the level of microbial control required.Biocides are versatile agents designed to control microorganisms by either inhibiting their growth or outright killing them. These agents work through various physical, chemical, mechanical, or biological mechanisms. The...

Continuous Culture of Bacteria at Constant Density via Automated Growth Rate Estimation

Begin with a turbidostat, a device that maintains a constant cell density in culture. The device contains a vessel with a bacterial culture, which is continuously aerated by stirring and maintained at a constant temperature.A laser diode emits a light beam that is split into two paths. One path is directed to a reference sensor to monitor laser intensity fluctuations, while the other passes through the culture.Bacterial cells scatter and absorb light, decreasing the transmitted intensity, which...

Physical Methods for Controlling Microbial Growth: Temperature

2025

Heat is a widely used method to control microbial growth by targeting and denaturing cellular proteins, thereby killing or inactivating microbes. This method's effectiveness is quantified using parameters such as the thermal death point (TDP), thermal death time (TDT), and decimal reduction time (D value). TDP represents the lowest temperature at which all microorganisms in a liquid suspension are eliminated within 10 minutes, whereas TDT is the time necessary to achieve sterilization at a...
