Digital Arteries

Digital arteries are small blood vessels that deliver oxygen-rich blood to the fingers and toes, supporting tissue metabolism, sensation, movement, and temperature regulation. They arise mainly from branches of the radial and ulnar arteries in the hand and form vascular networks along each digit before dividing into smaller vessels and capillaries, where oxygen and nutrients diffuse into surrounding tissues. Their circulation is important in biology and medicine because reduced digital blood flow can indicate arterial disease, trauma, or compression. Assessing digital pulses and perfusion also helps guide diagnosis, reconstructive microsurgery, and research on peripheral vascular function.

Detection of Internal Carotid Artery Narrowing Using Digital Subtraction Angiography

2025

Position a human patient with internal carotid stenosis, a condition characterized by narrowing of the internal carotid artery, on the imaging table for digital subtraction angiography (DSA). Insert an angiocatheter into the common carotid artery at the fourth cervical vertebra level. Capture a pre-contrast X-ray image to record background structures like bones and soft tissues using X-ray irradiation. Administer an iodine-based contrast medium into the carotid artery. The contrast medium...

Calcified Artery Preparation and Processing with Preserved Morphology and RNA for Digital Spatial Profiling

2026

This protocol includes a step-by-step workflow for calcified vascular specimens: tissue handling, decalcification, RNA validation, calcification level detection, and region-of-interest selection strategies on the Nanostring GeoMx Digital Spatial Profiler (DSP). The goal is to present a comprehensive method for preserving vascular tissue morphology and RNA for reliable spatial transcriptomic analysis.

Source: Sharon Bord, MD, Department of Emergency Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Maryland, USA When monitoring patients, it is important to obtain values that are accurate and reliable. Blood pressure monitoring is one of the essential vital signs, and for a majority of patients, measuring it utilizing non-invasive techniques provides accurate values. However, there are situations in which the blood pressure requires more exact, specific, and reliable measurements.

Direct Re-implantation of Left Coronary Artery into the Aorta in Adults with Anomalous Origin of Left Coronary Artery from the Pulmonary Artery (ALCAPA)

Surgical correction of ALCAPA is highly recommended, regardless of age or the degree of intercoronary collateralization. This protocol presents a technique for the direct re-implantation of adult-type ALCAPA into the aorta to re-establish the dual-coronary perfusion. Whenever feasible, direct re-implantation is preferred to other surgical correction techniques.

Mechanical Testing of Mouse Carotid Arteries: from Newborn to Adult

Passive mechanical testing of mouse carotid arteries is described, with special consideration for adapting to different specimen ages. The procedures include determining the in vivo length of the artery, mounting it in a pressure myograph, recording data, measuring the unloaded dimensions and analyzing the resulting data.
