Drosophila Brain

The Drosophila brain is the central nervous system of the fruit fly, a compact yet powerful model for studying how neural circuits produce behavior. Its interconnected neurons receive sensory information, integrate signals through synaptic communication, and generate coordinated motor, learning, and physiological responses. Because many cellular and molecular mechanisms are conserved across animals, researchers use Drosophila to investigate brain development, neural circuitry, memory, sleep, sensory processing, and neurodegenerative disease. Genetic tools that label, activate, or silence selected neurons allow scientists to link specific circuits with behavior and clarify fundamental principles of nervous-system function.

2025

This video demonstrates a detailed immunostaining protocol to visualize phenotypic defects in the mushroom bodies of mutant Drosophila brains. The protocol involves using antibodies against Fas2, a protein involved in axonal guidance that facilitates the proper morphological and functional development of the mushroom body.
