Electrophysiology Setup

An electrophysiology setup is a collection of electrodes, amplifiers, recording hardware, and software used to measure electrical signals produced by cells, tissues, or organs. Electrodes detect voltage differences or current flow, while an amplifier increases these small signals and a data-acquisition system records them for analysis under controlled experimental conditions. In biology, such setups support intracellular and extracellular recordings, including measurements of membrane potentials, action potentials, synaptic activity, and coordinated tissue responses. By linking electrical behavior to cellular function, electrophysiology helps researchers study neural communication, muscle contraction, sensory systems, ion-channel activity, and the effects of drugs or genetic changes.

Preparing a Rat Model to Assess Visual Pathway Integrity Using an Electrophysiology Setup

2025

This video demonstrates the preparation of a rat model to study retinal health and visual pathway integrity. Visual evoked potential and electroretinography reference and active electrodes are connected to the rat, followed by aligning the platform with the rat in front of the Ganzfeld bowl for even retinal illumination and closing the Faraday cage to avoid external interference.

A fast and inexpensive method for the behavioral determination of hearing parameters like hearing thresholds, hearing impairments or phantom perceptions (subjective tinnitus) is described. It uses pre-pulse inhibition of the acoustic startle response and can be easily implemented in a personal computer using a programmable AD/DA-converter and a piezo sensor.
