Dry Ice Storage

Dry ice storage is a low-temperature preservation method that uses solid carbon dioxide to keep biological materials cold during handling, transport, or temporary storage. At approximately −78.5°C, dry ice sublimates directly into carbon dioxide gas, absorbing heat from surrounding samples; insulated containers slow this loss, while ventilation prevents gas accumulation. In biology, this approach helps maintain tissues, cells, enzymes, nucleic acids, and other temperature-sensitive materials when mechanical freezing systems are unavailable or transport conditions are limited. Proper packaging, airflow, labeling, and protective equipment are essential because dry ice can cause cold injuries, pressure buildup, and oxygen displacement.

This protocol aims to preserve cell metabolites for single-cell mass spectrometry (SCMS) by combining volatile salt solution washing, rapid liquid nitrogen quenching, freeze-drying, and −8 °C storage. It demonstrates that liquid nitrogen quenching is essential for maintaining metabolite profiles, while prolonged cold storage should be minimized to prevent metabolic alterations.

A schema is a mental framework that helps individuals organize and interpret information. Schemata, formed from previous experiences, influence how we process new information: how we encode it, the inferences we make, and how we retrieve it. For instance, a schema for what a typical classroom looks like might include desks, a teacher's desk, a whiteboard, and students in such an environment. This expectation helps us quickly understand and navigate new classrooms without needing to analyze each...

Source: Robert M. Rioux & Taslima A. Zaman, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA While the use of various chemicals in experimental research is essential, it is also important to safely store and maintain them as a part of the Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) program. The properties of chemicals and their reactivity vary broadly and if chemicals are not managed, stored, and labeled properly, they can have harmful or even destructive consequences such as toxic fume...
