Ductus Arteriosus

The ductus arteriosus is a temporary fetal blood vessel that connects the pulmonary artery to the aorta, allowing blood to bypass the fluid-filled, nonfunctioning lungs before birth. Its patency depends largely on low oxygen levels and circulating prostaglandins, while increased oxygen exposure and reduced prostaglandin signaling after the first breaths promote smooth-muscle constriction and functional closure; it later becomes the ligamentum arteriosum. Understanding this transition is central to studying fetal circulation and neonatal cardiovascular adaptation. Abnormal persistence, known as patent ductus arteriosus, can alter blood flow and may require medical or surgical management, making the structure important in developmental biology and clinical cardiology.

Cardiac Exam III: Abnormal Heart Sounds

Source: Suneel Dhand, MD, Attending Physician, Internal Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Having a fundamental understanding of normal heart sounds is the first step toward distinguishing the normal from the abnormal. Murmurs are sounds that represent turbulent and abnormal blood flow across a heart valve. They are caused either by stenosis (valve area too narrow) or regurgitation (backflow of blood across the valve) and are commonly heard as a "swishing" sound during auscultation.

In this video, we describe the procedure for the dissection of the urogenital system or UGS from a male mouse model. This UGS is further dissected ex vivo to isolate the prostate gland and study its role in prostate cancer development.

Large animal models have good translational values in the examination of physiology and pharmacology of neonatal asphyxia. Using newborn piglets, we develop an experimental protocol to simulate neonatal asphyxia which has advantages of studying the systemic and regional hemodynamics, oxygen transport with biochemical and pathologic pathways and correlations.

We describe examination of fetal cardiac function with contemporary functional fetal echocardiography and fetoplacental Doppler ultrasound using the VisualSonics VEVO 2100 microultrasound in a surgically induced model of intrauterine fetal growth restriction in a rabbit.

The Comprehensive Infant Examination

Source: Heather Collette and Jaideep Talwalkar; Yale School of Medicine The newborn exam is important in establishing a baby's baseline health status as they enter the world. Newborn providers have the unique opportunity to evaluate a patient for the very first time. They are also tasked with identifying congenital anomalies that require early intervention to promote a long and healthy life for the child. Many newborn anomalies, such as heart defects, are noted on prenatal ultrasound. However,...
