Ductus Venosus

The ductus venosus is a temporary fetal blood vessel that directs oxygen-rich blood from the umbilical vein toward the inferior vena cava, helping support circulation before birth. By shunting part of the placental blood supply past the liver, it delivers relatively well-oxygenated blood to the heart while regulating fetal venous flow. After birth, when placental circulation stops, the vessel closes and forms the ligamentum venosum within the liver. Its anatomy and blood-flow patterns are important in developmental biology, prenatal ultrasound and Doppler assessment, and the study of congenital abnormalities affecting fetal circulation.

Source: Suneel Dhand, MD, Attending Physician, Internal Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Having a fundamental understanding of normal heart sounds is the first step toward distinguishing the normal from the abnormal. Murmurs are sounds that represent turbulent and abnormal blood flow across a heart valve. They are caused either by stenosis (valve area too narrow) or regurgitation (backflow of blood across the valve) and are commonly heard as a "swishing" sound during auscultation.

Large animal models have good translational values in the examination of physiology and pharmacology of neonatal asphyxia. Using newborn piglets, we develop an experimental protocol to simulate neonatal asphyxia which has advantages of studying the systemic and regional hemodynamics, oxygen transport with biochemical and pathologic pathways and correlations.
