Tears Lysozyme

Tear lysozyme is an antimicrobial enzyme found in the tear film, where it helps protect the eye’s exposed surface from microbial invasion. It works by hydrolyzing bonds in peptidoglycan, a structural component of many bacterial cell walls, thereby weakening and disrupting susceptible bacteria; continuous tear flow also helps distribute the enzyme across the cornea and remove debris. Studying tear lysozyme illustrates how innate immune defenses operate at mucosal surfaces and supports research into ocular protection, tear-film function, and antimicrobial strategies for eye-related conditions.

Capsulorhexis is an important step in phacoemulsification surgery. A surgeon creates a continous curvilinear tear on the anterior lens capsule by controlling the tearing vector forces. A peripherally extended tear is a serious complication. This video demonstrates a novel technique of rescuing capsular radial tear out using a cystotome.

Analysis of tear film cytokines helps in studying various ocular diseases. Bead based multiplex assays are simple and sensitive and enable the testing of multiple targets in samples with small volumes. Here we describe a protocol for tear film cytokine profiling a using bead based multiplex assay.

Quantification of Tear Volume in an Autoimmune Dry Eye Rat Model using the Phenol Red Thread

This video demonstrates the phenol red thread test to determine tear volume in an autoimmune dry eye rat model. The pH-sensitive acidic phenol red thread changes color when it comes in contact with the alkaline tears. The shorter length of color change in the phenol red thread corresponds to reduced tear volume.
