Duodenal Biopsy

Duodenal biopsy is a diagnostic procedure that removes small tissue samples from the duodenum, the first section of the small intestine, to examine its microscopic structure and identify disease-related changes. During upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, a flexible instrument guides biopsy forceps to the intestinal lining, where sampled tissue is preserved, sectioned, stained, and evaluated for cellular and architectural abnormalities. This method can reveal villous injury, inflammatory changes, infection, or abnormal cell growth and is especially important in investigating malabsorption and suspected celiac disease. By linking tissue structure with intestinal function, duodenal biopsy supports diagnosis, disease classification, and research in gastrointestinal biology.

2026

This video case report demonstrates the unique management of a duodenal gastrointestinal stromal tumor with a rare, understudied, exon 8 KIT mutation. Neoadjuvant therapy resulted in a 30% reduction in tumor size, making the patient a candidate for a robotic-assisted duodenal sleeve resection instead of the more morbid pancreaticoduodenectomy.

2023

This protocol presents a case of a robotic partial duodenal resection with primary side-to-side duodeno-jejunal reconstruction in a patient with a 5 cm duodenal stenosis. This is done at the third duodenal segment (D3) after an endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) for a duodenal polyp.

We standardized an abdominal adipose tissue biopsy using a non-diathermy method performed under local anesthesia. Three cases of excessive post-operation bleeding out of 115 operations (2.61%) occurred. We conclude that an abdominal adipose tissue surgical biopsy using a non-diathermy method can be safely applied to healthy men.
