Ecm Hydrogel

An ECM hydrogel is a water-rich, three-dimensional biomaterial made from extracellular matrix components that supports cell growth, organization, and signaling in biological research. Typically produced by decellularizing tissue, enzymatically solubilizing the remaining matrix, and triggering crosslinking under controlled conditions, it forms a hydrated network containing structural proteins and biochemical cues that can influence cell adhesion, migration, and differentiation. ECM hydrogels provide tissue-relevant environments for cell culture, organoid development, tissue engineering, disease modeling, and drug testing. Their composition and mechanical properties can be adjusted to model specific tissues, helping researchers investigate how the cellular microenvironment regulates biological function and regeneration.

Collagen Hydrogels

2023

Collagen is another widely used biomaterial that has found popularity in commercial applications, such as photography. Collagen has more recently been used in tissue engineering applications, by creating hydrogels that provide structure to engineered tissue. This video introduces collagen as a biomaterial, demonstrates how it is harvested from porcine skin, and shows how the material is used to create a hydrogel for tissue engineering applications. Finally, several applications of the material...

Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Hydrogels are a versatile class of cross-linked polymers produced through relatively simple procedures and with generally inexpensive materials. They can be formed from solution and involve a polymer backbone formed from monomer reagents, an initiator which makes the polymer reactive and a crosslinking species which binds the polymer chains...

An In Vitro Method to Generate Astrocyte Scaffolds within Hydrogel Micro-columns

2025

This video demonstrates a method to generate three-dimensional astrocyte scaffolds within hydrogel micro-columns. The inside of the microcolumns are coated with collagen. Astrocytes are introduced, which adhere to collagen and, with further incubation, self-assemble into a three-dimensional scaffold.

Traction Cytometry Assay: A Method to Quantify Traction Force Exerted by Cancer Cells on ECM

2023

This video describes the traction force microscopy assay. The assay determines the cellular traction of human colon cancer cells on the extracellular matrix present on soft elastic hydrogel having embedded fluorescent beads. The resultant displacement of fluorescent beads is measured using an appropriate software.
