Egg Mass Analysis

Egg mass analysis is the quantitative study of grouped eggs to assess their abundance, size, condition, distribution, and developmental status in biological systems. Researchers typically collect or image egg masses using standardized sampling, then count them and record measurements such as mass, dimensions, density, and visible signs of development or damage. These data help evaluate reproductive output, population structure, habitat quality, and environmental effects on reproduction. In laboratory and field biology, egg mass analysis supports species monitoring, ecological surveys, developmental studies, and conservation decisions by providing measurable indicators of reproductive success and population health.

2017

Lipid droplets are important organelles for the replication of several pathogens, including the Hepatitis C Virus (HCV). We describe a method to isolate lipid droplets for quantitative mass spectrometry of associated proteins; it can be used under a variety of conditions, such as virus infection, environmental stress, or drug treatment.

2013

A specific and sensitive method to gain insight into the expression profile of glycosphingolipid antigens in immune organs and cells is described. The method takes advantage of the ion trap mass spectrometry allowing step-wise fragmentation of glycosphingolipid molecules for structural analysis in comparison to chemically synthesized standards.

Egg Laying Assay: A Method to Quantify the Egg-Laying Behavior of C. elegans

2023

C. elegans egg-laying behavior can provide important information in developmental, reproductive, and anatomical studies. This video introduces the important steps of an egg laying assay and shows a sample experiment in which a drug is tested for reproductive toxicity.

Drosophila Egg Collection and Dechorionation: A Method to Remove the Outermost Egg Layer

2023

The Drosophila embryo is surrounded by protective outer membranes. To gain access to the embryo, the chorion–the outermost of the membranes–is often removed. This video describes a commonly used method of dechorionation using sodium hypochlorite. The example protocol demonstrates the procedure while employing sterile techniques necessary for axenic or gnotobiotic animal rearing.

Egg Windowing: A Method of Opening Fertilized Chicken Egg Shell to Expose Chorioallantoic Membrane Vasculature
