Electrostatic Surface Mapping

Electrostatic surface mapping is a computational method that represents the distribution of electrical potential across a molecule’s surface, helping researchers interpret how charge influences biological structure and interactions. The method uses atomic coordinates and partial charges to calculate electrostatic potential, often accounting for solvent properties and ionic strength, then displays regions of positive, negative, or near-neutral potential on a molecular surface. In biology, these maps help assess protein–protein recognition, ligand binding, nucleic acid interactions, and the effects of mutations on molecular behavior. By linking surface charge patterns with molecular function, electrostatic mapping supports structural analysis, biomolecular modeling, and rational experimental design.

We present a unique platform for characterizing electrode surfaces in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) that allows simultaneous performance of multiple characterization techniques (e.g. in situ Raman spectroscopy and scanning probe microscopy alongside electrochemical measurements). Complementary information from these analyses may help to advance toward a more profound understanding of electrode reaction and degradation mechanisms, providing insights into rational design of better materials for...

Electrostatic Boundary Conditions

2025

Consider an external electric field propagating through a homogeneous medium. When the electric field crosses the surface boundary of the medium, it undergoes a discontinuity. The electric field can be resolved into normal and tangential components. The amount by which the field changes at any boundary is given by the difference between the field components above and below the surface boundary. The surface integral of an electric field is given by Gauss's law in integral form and is related to...

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California One principle of brain organization is the topographic mapping of information. Especially in sensory and motor cortices, adjacent regions of the brain tend to represent information from adjacent parts of the body, resulting in maps of the body expressed on the surface of the brain. The primary sensory and motor maps in the brain surround a prominent sulcus known as the central sulcus. The cortex...

Electrostatic Boundary Conditions in Dielectrics

When an electric field passes from one homogeneous medium to another, crossing the boundary between the two mediums imparts a discontinuity in the electric field. This results in electrostatic boundary conditions that depend on the type of mediums the field propagates through. Consider a case where both the mediums across a boundary are two different dielectric materials. Recall that the electric field and electric displacement are proportional and related through the material's permittivity.
