Energy Expenditure

Energy expenditure is the total amount of energy an organism uses to sustain life, perform physical activity, and process nutrients. In biology, it reflects energy demands from basal metabolism, thermogenesis, movement, and digestion, with cells converting chemical energy from food into ATP and heat through metabolic pathways such as cellular respiration. Measuring energy expenditure helps researchers assess metabolism, growth, exercise, nutrition, and energy balance in organisms. These measurements also inform studies of obesity, metabolic disease, ecological adaptation, and animal behavior by revealing how physiological conditions, environmental stress, and activity alter the flow and use of energy.
