Fat Distribution

Fat distribution is the pattern of adipose tissue placement throughout the body, and it matters because location influences energy storage, hormone signaling, and metabolic health. It reflects interactions among genetics, sex hormones, diet, physical activity, and insulin signaling: subcutaneous fat lies beneath the skin, whereas visceral fat surrounds internal organs and can release inflammatory mediators that alter glucose and lipid metabolism. Studying this pattern supports biological and biomedical research on body composition, obesity risk, insulin resistance, and cardiovascular disease, while informing imaging studies, animal models, and interventions designed to improve metabolic health.

We describe an ovarian fad pad transplantation assay suitable for studies of normal and transformed epithelia of the female reproductive tract. The mouse fat pad allows transplantation of large tissue fragments, is easily accessible for surgery and imaging, and provides the most favorable native environment for tissues of Müllerian origin.

This study introduces a unique 3D quantification method for liver fat fraction (LFF) distribution using Dixon Magnetic Resonance Imaging (Dixon MRI). LFF maps, derived from in-phase and water-phase images, are integrated with 3D liver contours to differentiate LFF patterns between normal and steatotic livers, enabling precise assessment of liver fat content.
