Ferric Iron Reduction

Ferric iron reduction is the conversion of ferric iron, Fe(III), to ferrous iron, Fe(II), an important redox process in biology and environmental chemistry. In many microorganisms, the process occurs during anaerobic respiration, when cells transfer electrons from organic compounds or hydrogen to Fe(III) minerals through membrane-associated carriers or soluble electron shuttles, generating energy for growth. This transformation changes iron solubility and mobility, influencing nutrient availability, carbon cycling, and the fate of contaminants such as metals and pollutants. Ferric iron reduction is therefore central to microbial ecology, sediment biogeochemistry, groundwater chemistry, and the development of bioremediation strategies.
