Germanium Clusters

Germanium clusters are nanoscale aggregates of germanium atoms whose properties differ from those of bulk germanium because their small size and atomic arrangement strongly influence reactivity, stability, and electronic behavior. They form when germanium atoms bond into compact structures, and changes in cluster size, geometry, charge, or surrounding environment can alter orbital interactions and surface chemistry. In biology-related research, these features support investigations of cluster interactions with biomolecules, interfaces, and cellular environments, while also informing the design of potential germanium-based probes or materials. Studying such clusters links nanoscale chemistry with molecular recognition, biocompatibility, and controlled function in biological systems.

2012

We present the high-temperature synthesis of intermetallic precursors K4Ge9, their dissolution in ethylenediamine to form Ge94- deltahedral Zintl ions, and the reaction of the clusters with alkynes to form organo-Zintl ions. The latter are characterized by electrospray mass spectrometry in solutions and by single-crystal X-ray diffraction in the solid state.

Epitaxial Growth of Perovskite Strontium Titanate on Germanium via Atomic Layer Deposition

This work details the procedures for the growth and characterization of crystalline SrTiO3 directly on germanium substrates by atomic layer deposition. The procedure illustrates the ability of an all-chemical growth method to integrate oxides monolithically onto semiconductors for metal-oxide semiconductor devices.

Here we describe a simple method for patterning oxide-free silicon and germanium with reactive organic monolayers and demonstrate functionalization of the patterned substrates with small molecules and proteins. The approach completely protects surfaces from chemical oxidation, provides precise control over feature morphology, and provides ready access to chemically discriminated patterns.

Spatial Separation of Molecular Conformers and Clusters

2014

We present a technique that allows the spatial separation of different conformers or clusters present in a molecular beam. An electrostatic deflector is used to separate species by their mass-to-dipole moment ratio, leading to the production of gas-phase ensembles of a single conformer or cluster stoichiometry.

Cluster Sampling Method

2023

Appropriate sampling methods ensure that samples are drawn without bias and accurately represent the population. Because measuring the entire population in a study is not practical, researchers use samples to represent the population of interest. To choose a cluster sample, divide the population into clusters (groups) and then randomly select some of the clusters. All the members from these clusters are in the cluster sample. For example, if you randomly sample four departments from your...
