Glandular Tissue

Glandular tissue is specialized epithelial tissue that synthesizes and releases substances such as hormones, enzymes, mucus, or sweat, enabling communication, digestion, protection, and regulation throughout the body. Its secretory cells package products into vesicles and release them by exocytosis; depending on the gland, ducts deliver secretions to an epithelial surface or lumen (exocrine secretion), while endocrine cells release hormones into surrounding tissue fluid and blood. In biology, studying glandular tissue helps explain organ function, homeostasis, development, and disease, including how altered secretion contributes to diabetes, thyroid disorders, and other conditions. Histological analysis and cell-based models support research into gland structure and function.

Classification of Epithelial Tissues: Glandular Epithelium

2025

The glandular epithelium is made of one or more epithelial cells modified to synthesize and secrete chemical substances. Glandular epithelia can be classified based on cell number. Unicellular glands have individual secretory cells scattered across the epithelial monolayer. In contrast, multicellular glands consist of a hollow tubular duct attached to the cluster of secretory cells located in the deep pockets. Multicellular glands are formed during early development when epithelial budding...

Drug Excretion: Pulmonary and Glandular Routes

2025

Gaseous substances like general anesthetics are absorbed and excreted through the lungs via simple diffusion. This process depends on factors such as pulmonary blood flow, respiration rate, and the substance's solubility. Gaseous anesthetics like nitrous oxide with low blood solubility are excreted rapidly, while compounds like alcohol, with high blood and tissue solubility, are excreted slowly. Drugs can also be excreted in breast milk, which is crucial for breastfeeding infants. The process...

2023

A protocol is presented for the convenient and high-throughput isolation and enrichment of glandular capitate stalked and sessile trichomes from Cannabis sativa. The protocol is based on a dry, non-buffer extraction of trichomes using only liquid nitrogen, dry ice, and nylon sieves and is suitable for RNA extraction and transcriptomic analysis.

Gastric Fundic Glands Isolation: A Method to Isolate Fundic Glands from Human Stomach Tissue
