Glans Penis

The glans penis is the expanded, highly sensitive distal portion of the penis, surrounding the external opening of the urethra and contributing to both reproductive and urinary functions. It is formed primarily by the expanded end of the corpus spongiosum; during erection, this erectile tissue enlarges while helping preserve the urethral passage, and its dense sensory innervation detects touch and pressure. Studying the glans penis supports understanding of male reproductive anatomy, sexual sensation, urination, and the role of the foreskin in protecting its surface. Its structure also has clinical relevance in hygiene, inflammation, infection, and congenital or acquired anatomical conditions.
