Intrauterine Devices

Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are small, reversible contraceptive devices placed in the uterus to prevent pregnancy, making them an important example of how biology can be applied to reproductive health. Copper IUDs release copper ions that impair sperm motility and viability, while hormonal IUDs release levonorgestrel, which thickens cervical mucus and can suppress sperm movement; hormonal effects also thin the uterine lining. Because they provide long-acting contraception without requiring daily action and can be removed when pregnancy is desired, IUDs are widely used in clinical care and offer a useful model for studying interactions among reproductive anatomy, hormones, gametes, and fertility.

Establishment of a Rat Model for Intrauterine Adhesions via Dual Injury: Curettage and Infection

Intrauterine adhesions (IUAs), the most common pathological consequence of endometrial injury, severely impair reproductive function. Trauma and infection are widely recognized as key risk factors for IUA development. We have successfully established a reproducible rat model of IUAs by combining two critical injury methods: mechanical curettage and infectious induction with lipopolysaccharide.

Intrauterine Drug Delivery Systems

2026

Controlled-release systems for intravaginal and intrauterine drug delivery have been developed primarily for the administration of contraceptive steroid hormones. These delivery routes circumvent first-pass hepatic metabolism, thereby enhancing bioavailability and allowing for reduced systemic dosages compared to oral administration. Such approaches contribute to improved therapeutic efficacy and patient compliance, particularly in long-term contraceptive regimens.Intravaginal Drug Delivery...
