Glutathione Solution

Glutathione solution is an aqueous preparation of glutathione, a naturally occurring tripeptide that helps maintain cellular redox balance and protect biomolecules from oxidative damage. Its active sulfhydryl group donates reducing equivalents to reactive oxygen species and oxidized cellular compounds, converting reduced glutathione (GSH) to glutathione disulfide (GSSG); cellular enzymes can then regenerate GSH. In biology laboratories, glutathione solutions serve as reducing reagents, components of biochemical assays, and supplements in experimental systems examining oxidative stress, protein thiol status, and detoxification. Concentration, pH, and handling conditions influence solution stability and experimental results.

Phase II Reactions: Glutathione Conjugation and Mercapturic Acid Formation

2025

Glutathione, a tripeptide made up of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine, is a critical player in the detoxification of drugs and xenobiotics via a process known as glutathione conjugation or mercapturic acid formation. This phase II biotransformation reaction involves the covalent binding of glutathione to a drug or its metabolite, enhancing the compound's water solubility and enabling its excretion. Several distinctive characteristics distinguish glutathione conjugation from other phase II...

Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are detoxification enzymes involved in the metabolism of numerous chemotherapeutic drugs. Overexpression of GSTs is correlated with cancer chemotherapy resistance. One way to counter this phenotype is to use inhibitors. This protocol describes a method using a spectrophotometric assay to screen for potential GST inhibitors.

Making Solutions in the Laboratory

The ability to successfully make solutions is a basic laboratory skill performed in virtually all biological and chemical experiments. A solution is a homogenous mixture of solute dissolved in bulk liquid known as the solvent. Solutions can be described by their solute concentration, a measure of how much solute is present per unit of solution. In this video, a step-by-step procedure for how to make a water-based, or aqueous, solution for biological applications is presented. The video...

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Michael Evans — Georgia Institute of Technology A solution is a homogeneous mixture containing some components in small amounts, called solutes, and one component in a large amount, called the solvent. Solid-liquid solutions contain one or more solid solutes dissolved in a liquid solvent. Solutions are ubiquitous in chemistry: they are used to store and handle small amounts of material, carry out chemical reactions, and develop materials with controllable properties.
