Grid Square Mapping

Grid square mapping is a systematic field method for recording where organisms occur across a defined area by dividing it into equal cells. In biology, researchers assign coordinates to each square, survey the same-sized quadrats, and note species presence, abundance, or other features under consistent sampling conditions. This spatial framework reveals patterns such as clustering, distribution boundaries, and changes in habitat use, while making observations easier to compare among sites or over time. It supports biodiversity surveys, population monitoring, habitat assessment, and conservation planning by linking biological observations to location and providing a reproducible basis for evaluating ecological change.

Mapping the Cellular Distribution of an Optogenetic Protein Using a Light-Stimulation Grid

2024

This protocol involves transfecting cAMP sensors and bPAC-nLuc, an optogenetic protein, to accurately track its cellular distribution and response to light stimulation. The innovative approach of creating a cAMP response map using a point scanning system holds the potential for advancing research with optogenetic proteins in different fields.

Root Mean Square

If in an experiment, data values have a probability of being both positive and negative, neither the arithmetic mean, the geometric mean, nor the harmonic mean can be used to calculate the central tendency of the data set. In particular, if the positive and negative values are equally likely, the arithmetic mean is close to zero. For example, consider the velocity of gas molecules in a container. The gas molecules are moving in different directions, which might impart positive and negative...

Punnett Squares

A Punnett square displays the possible genotypes offspring can inherit from two parental genotypes. If a trait’s inheritance pattern (e.g., dominant or recessive) is known, Punnett squares can also be used to determine the probability of inheriting a phenotype. Punnett squares are applicable in situations where trait inheritance is determined by a single gene locus and traits are independently inherited. However, they cannot predict trait probabilities for more complex genetic inheritance...

Chi-square Analysis

The chi-square test is a statistical hypothesis test. It is used to check whether there is a significant difference between an expected value and an observed value. In the context of genetics, it enables us to either accept or reject a hypothesis, based on how much the observed values deviate from the expected values. The chi-square test was developed by Pearson in 1990. The first step of performing a Chi-square analysis is to establish a null hypothesis, which assumes that there is no real...
