Harmonic Mechanical Stimulation

Harmonic mechanical stimulation is the application of periodic, typically sinusoidal, forces or deformations to biological cells, tissues, or biomaterials to study how they respond to mechanical cues. By controlling variables such as frequency, amplitude, and duration, researchers impose cyclic loading that cells detect through mechanosensitive structures, including integrins, ion channels, and the cytoskeleton, triggering mechanotransduction and changes in gene expression or cell behavior. In biology, this approach helps characterize responses to physiological movement and altered mechanical environments, supporting research on tissue development, remodeling, disease mechanisms, and the design of engineered tissues and therapeutic strategies.

Source: Ketron Mitchell-Wynne, PhD, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA Potential energy is an important concept in physics. Potential energy is the energy associated with forces that depend upon the position of an object relative to its surroundings. Gravitational potential energy, which is discussed in another video, is the energy associated that is directly proportional to the height of an object above...

Harmonic Mean

2023

The arithmetic mean is usually skewed towards the larger values in the data set. Therefore, to avoid this inherent bias towards smaller values, the harmonic mean is used. Take the example of the speed of a car, which is the measure of the rate of distance traveled. If the vehicle traverses the same distance back-and-forth, its average speed equals the total distance traveled divided by the total time taken. However, if the car moves with varying speeds, then the arithmetic mean is more skewed...

This protocol presents a step-by-step guide for the Simultaneous Label-free Autofluorescence Multi-harmonic (SLAM) microscopic technique, including details on how to generate the laser light source, prepare a tissue sample, conduct imaging, and analyze the data. SLAM advances nonlinear microscopy by measuring four complementary label-free contrasts to investigate the tissue microenvironment.
