Homogalacturonan

Homogalacturonan is a major pectic polysaccharide in plant cell walls, composed primarily of α-(1→4)-linked D-galacturonic acid residues. Its properties depend strongly on the methyl esterification of these residues: de-esterification exposes negatively charged carboxyl groups, allowing calcium ions to form ionic bridges between chains and alter wall porosity and stiffness. Studying homogalacturonan helps explain how pectin remodeling influences cell expansion, tissue adhesion, fruit softening, and interactions with microbes; it also supports research on plant development, food texture, and engineered biomaterial design.
