Homunculus

A homunculus is a visual representation of how the human body is organized across the brain’s sensory or motor cortex, with body parts drawn in proportion to their neural representation rather than their physical size. This map arises from somatotopic organization, in which neighboring cortical regions correspond to neighboring body regions, while areas requiring fine sensation or precise movement occupy more cortical space. The sensory homunculus emphasizes inputs such as touch and proprioception, whereas the motor homunculus reflects voluntary movement control. Studying these maps helps researchers understand brain function, assess changes after injury or stroke, and guide research in neuroprosthetics and rehabilitation.

Motor Maps

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California One principle of brain organization is the topographic mapping of information. Especially in sensory and motor cortices, adjacent regions of the brain tend to represent information from adjacent parts of the body, resulting in maps of the body expressed on the surface of the brain. The primary sensory and motor maps in the brain surround a prominent sulcus known as the central sulcus. The cortex...

An Introduction to Motor Control

2023

Motor control involves integration and processing of sensory information by our nervous system, followed by a response through our skeletal system to perform a voluntary or involuntary action. It is vital to understand how our neuroskeletal system controls motor behavior in order to evaluate injuries pertaining to general movement, reflexes, and coordination. An improved understanding of motor control will help behavioral neuroscientists in developing useful tools to treat motor disorders, such...

An Introduction to Neuroanatomy

Neuroanatomy is the study of nervous system structures and how they relate to function. One focus of neuroanatomists is the macroscopic structures within the central and peripheral nervous systems, like the cortical folds on the surface of the brain. However, scientists in this field are also interested in the microscopic relationships between neurons and glia - the two major cell types of the nervous system. This video provides a brief overview of the history of neuroanatomical research,...

The stomatogastric nervous system (STNS) of the Jonah crab (C. borealis) can be used for electrophysiology, immunohistochemistry, and cell culture studies. The STNS extraction is done in two parts: the gross and fine dissection.
