Infectivity Analysis

Infectivity analysis is the assessment of an infectious agent’s ability to enter, replicate within, and spread among susceptible cells or hosts. It typically involves exposing a biological system to defined agent concentrations, measuring infection through indicators such as infected-cell frequency, replication, or cytopathic effects, and relating these outcomes to dose and time. In biology, infectivity analysis supports the characterization of viruses, bacteria, parasites, and other agents, while helping researchers compare strains, evaluate host susceptibility, and assess the effects of antiviral or antimicrobial interventions. The resulting measurements strengthen studies of transmission, disease mechanisms, and biological safety.

Human infection by Entamoeba histolytica leads to amoebiasis, a major cause of diarrhea in tropical countries. Infection is initiated by pathogen interactions with intestinal epithelial cells, provoking the opening of cell-cell contacts and consequently diarrhea, sometimes followed by liver infection. This article provides a model to assess the early host-pathogen interactions to improve our understanding of amoebiasis pathogenesis.

A method for isolation of adherent inflammatory leukocytes from brain blood vessels of Plasmodium berghei ANKA-infected mice is described. The method allows quantification as well as phenotypic characterization of isolated leukocytes after staining with fluorescent antibodies and subsequent analysis by flow cytometry.
