Limb Use Assessment

Limb Use Assessment is a behavioral method for measuring how an organism uses its limbs during movement or goal-directed tasks, providing evidence of motor function and lateralization. Researchers observe or record variables such as limb preference, movement frequency, task success, coordination, and weight-bearing, often comparing performance across conditions or time points. In biology, these assessments help characterize normal development, species-specific behavior, and the effects of injury, disease, environmental change, or experimental treatment. Quantitative limb-use data can reveal changes in neural control and support comparisons between individuals, populations, or experimental groups.

The electroretinogram (ERG) is an electrical potential generated by the retina in response to light. This paper describes how to use the ERG to assess retinal function, in dark-adapted rats, and how it can be can be used to assess a neuroprotective intervention, in the present case remote ischemic preconditioning.

Mouse models have become increasingly popular in studies of behavioral neuroscience. As models advance, it is important to develop sensitive behavioral measures specific to the mouse. This protocol describes the Pasta Matrix Reaching Task, which is a skilled motor task for use in mouse models of stroke.

Described here is a staged, behavioral screening approach that can be used to screen for compounds that exhibit in vivo efficacy on cognitive and functional motor behaviors in transgenic mouse models of β-amyloidosis and tauopathy. These methods are optimized to screen compounds for activity in short-term and working memory tasks.
