Lung Protection

Lung protection refers to the anatomical, mechanical, and immune defenses that keep the respiratory system functional by limiting injury from particles, pathogens, and harmful chemicals. In the conducting airways, mucus traps inhaled material, cilia move it toward the throat, and coughing expels accumulated secretions; deeper in the lungs, alveolar macrophages remove particles while surfactant helps stabilize air sacs. These coordinated barriers support efficient gas exchange and reduce infection and tissue damage. In biology and medicine, studying lung protection informs research on airway disease, inflammation, ventilation strategies, occupational exposure, and interventions designed to preserve respiratory function.

This paper describes a striaghforward and efficient method of intubating mice for pulmonary function measurements or pulmonary instillation, that allows the mice to recover and be studied at later times. The procedure involves an inexpensive fiberoptic light source that directly illuminates the trachea.

Zones of Protection

In power systems, the entire setup is divided into protective zones to isolate faults and protect the rest of the network. These zones include generators, transformers, buses, transmission lines, distribution lines, and motors. Each zone can be visualized as a separate room in a house, with each room protected by its own circuit breaker. Protective zones are defined by closed dashed lines, containing one or more components. A key characteristic of these zones is the strategic placement of...

This lesson delves into the concept of protection and deprotection of a functional group fundamental to synthetic organic chemistry. These phenomena are explained in the context of aliphatic and aromatic alcohols. Protection It defines a protecting group as the masking agent to make the more reactive species inert to a given set of conditions. This concept is depicted via the illustration of liquid flow through different outlets in an assembly of pipes. The analogy helps to understand the role...

Lung Capacity

The air in the lungs is measured in volumes and capacities. Lung volume measures reflect the amount of air taken in, released, or left over after a lung function, like a single inhalation. Lung capacity measures are sums of two or more lung volume measures. There are four defined lung volume measures: tidal volume, inspiratory reserve volume, expiratory reserve volume, and residual volume. Tidal volume is the amount of air inhaled and exhaled in a normal breath. Inspiratory...
