Mandibular Condyle Analysis

Mandibular condyle analysis is the systematic assessment of the mandibular condyle, the rounded upper part of the mandible that articulates with the temporal bone at the temporomandibular joint. It combines anatomical observation, measurements, and imaging to characterize condylar shape, size, position, movement, and structural variation. By comparing these features across specimens or individuals, researchers can investigate jaw development, joint function, asymmetry, and changes associated with injury or disease. In biology, this analysis helps connect skeletal form with biomechanics and supports research on craniofacial variation, temporomandibular joint health, and mandibular development.

Minor workers of the ant species Colobopsis explodens are dissected to isolate the wax-like content stored in their hypertrophied mandibular gland reservoirs for subsequent solvent-extraction and analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The annotation and identification of volatile constituents using the open-source software MetaboliteDetector is also described.
