Matrix Synthesis

Matrix synthesis is the biological production and assembly of extracellular matrix components that provide tissues with structural support, organization, and biochemical signals. Specialized cells such as fibroblasts and chondrocytes produce proteins including collagen, proteoglycans, and adhesive glycoproteins, which they secrete and organize into a tissue-specific network; enzymatic cross-linking and matrix remodeling help establish its mechanical properties. In biology, studying matrix synthesis clarifies how tissues develop, repair damage, and maintain function. It also informs research on fibrosis, cartilage degeneration, cancer progression, biomaterials, and tissue engineering, where controlling matrix composition can support regeneration or model disease processes.

Synthesis of Ligand-free CdS Nanoparticles within a Sulfur Copolymer Matrix

2016

Herein we present a method to synthesize ligand-free cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoparticles based on a unique sulfur copolymer. The sulfur copolymer operates as a high temperature solvent and a sulfur source during the nanoparticle synthesis and stabilizes the nanoparticles after the reaction.

Source: Amber N. Barron, Ashlea Patterson, and Taylor D. Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Hydrogels are a versatile class of cross-linked polymers produced through relatively simple procedures and with generally inexpensive materials. They can be formed from solution and involve a polymer backbone formed from monomer reagents, an initiator which makes the polymer reactive and a crosslinking species which binds the polymer chains...

Solid Phase Synthesis

Source: Vy M. Dong and Diane Le, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA Merrifield's solid-phase synthesis is a Nobel Prize winning invention where a reactant molecule is bound on a solid support and undergoes successive chemical reactions to form a desired compound. When the molecules are bound to a solid support, excess reagents and byproducts can be removed by washing away the impurities, while the target compound remains bound to the resin. Specifically, we will...

Synthesis and Decomposition Reactions

2020

Synthesis and decomposition are two types of redox reactions. Synthesis means to make something, whereas decomposition means to break something. The reactions are accompanied by chemical and energy changes. Synthesis Reactions Synthesis reactions are also called combination reactions. It is a reaction in which two or more substances combine to form a complex substance. Synthesis reactions are generally represented as: A + B → AB or A + B → C. The formation of nitrogen dioxide is a synthesis...
