Minor Groove Binder

A minor groove binder is a small molecule that associates with the narrow minor groove of double-stranded DNA, where it can recognize sequence features and alter DNA structure or function. Binding typically involves shape complementarity, hydrogen bonding to base-pair edges, van der Waals contacts, and electrostatic attraction between positively charged groups and the DNA phosphate backbone; many binders preferentially target AT-rich regions. In biology, minor groove binders support fluorescent DNA staining, sequence-specific detection, and studies of DNA conformation and protein-DNA interactions. Some are also investigated as therapeutic agents because they can interfere with transcription, replication, or DNA repair, although their effects depend strongly on structure and binding selectivity.

Minor Losses in Pipes

2025

In pipe systems, minor losses refer to energy losses arising from components such as valves, bends, fittings, expansions, and other features that disrupt the steady flow of fluid. These disturbances cause energy dissipation through turbulence and resistance, which engineers quantify to manage system efficiency effectively. Valves play a significant role in generating minor losses by obstructing or redirecting the fluid flow. When a valve is closed or partially closed, it restricts the flow...

A Minority of One: Conformity to Group Norms

Source: William Brady & Jay Van Bavel—New York University It is obvious that we are influenced by those around us, but in the early to mid 1900's, psychologists began to study how potent social influence can be on our thoughts and behaviors. Motivated in part by attempts to explain the behaviors of Nazi soldiers in World War II, one topic of considerable interest at the time in psychology was conformity, the phenomenon in which people match their attitudes, behaviors, or beliefs to group...

We present a novel method of manufacturing rigid and robust short natural fiber preforms using a papermaking process. Bacterial cellulose acts simultaneously as the binder for the loose fibers and provides rigidity to the fiber preforms. These preforms can be infused with a resin to produce truly green hierarchical composites.

2016

In this study, a protocol was developed to produce good quality pellets using a flat die pellet mill at reduced specific energy consumption testing high-moisture corn stover and a starch based binder. The results indicated that adding a corn starch binder improved the pellet durability, reduced percent fines and decreased specific energy consumption.
