Odontogenesis

Odontogenesis is the biological process by which teeth develop, organize, and mineralize, making it central to understanding oral development and dental health. It begins with interactions between oral epithelium and neural crest-derived mesenchyme, which form the dental lamina and guide progression through the bud, cap, and bell stages; reciprocal molecular signals then determine tooth shape, cell differentiation, and tissue formation. Studying odontogenesis helps explain congenital dental abnormalities, tooth eruption, and defects in enamel or dentin. Its principles also support research in developmental biology, tissue engineering, and regenerative dentistry aimed at restoring or replacing damaged teeth.
