Therapeutic Cell Delivery

Therapeutic cell delivery is the controlled administration of living cells to a patient or target tissue to restore function, replace damaged cells, or modify disease processes. It works by selecting a cell type and delivery route that support cell survival, localization, and interaction with the host microenvironment, often using direct injection, biomaterial scaffolds, or encapsulation systems. In biology and regenerative medicine, this approach supports tissue repair, immune modulation, and disease modeling, while research focuses on improving cell viability, targeting, engraftment, and functional integration. Effective delivery can increase therapeutic benefit and reduce unintended effects, advancing cell-based treatments for complex diseases.

Stem cells are promising therapeutic carriers to treat brain tumors due to their intrinsic tumor tropism. Non-invasive intranasal stem cell delivery bypasses the blood brain barrier and demonstrates strong potential for clinical translation. This article summarizes the basic principles of intranasal stem cell delivery in a mouse model of glioma.

The goal of this protocol is to use cationic/anionic liposomes with a neuro-targeting peptide as a CNS delivery system to enable siRNA to cross the BBB. The optimization of a delivery system for treatments, like siRNA, would allow for more treatment options for prion and other neurodegenerative diseases.
