Optogenetic Protein Mapping

Optogenetic protein mapping is a biological approach that uses light to control and track proteins in defined cells or subcellular regions, helping researchers link protein location with function. It typically combines genetically encoded light-sensitive domains with fluorescent tags or modular binding partners; illumination triggers a conformational change, exposing an interaction site or recruiting a target protein, while microscopy records its movement and activity. This spatial and temporal control supports studies of protein interactions, signaling pathways, membrane trafficking, and cytoskeletal organization. By testing molecular events with precise timing, optogenetic protein mapping can reveal causal relationships that conventional biochemical or imaging methods may obscure.

Microtubule Associated Proteins (MAPs)

2023

Microtubule function and architecture are regulated by an array of specialized proteins called microtubule-associated proteins or MAPs. These proteins are widespread across different organisms and have conserved protein motifs, like the multi-TOG domain for tubulin binding found in the CLASP family of MAPs. Some MAPs are lineage-specific based on their conserved domains. Their functions depend upon the cytoskeletal architecture and cell type they are located within. In-plant cells, a specific...
