Organic Phosphorus

Organic phosphorus refers to phosphorus-containing molecules associated with carbon-based compounds, forming a major chemical pool in living systems and ecosystems. In biology, phosphorus commonly occurs in phosphate groups that form ester bonds with sugars, lipids, or other organic molecules; these groups can undergo hydrolysis and phosphoryl transfer, changing molecular structure, energy storage, and protein activity. Organic phosphorus is essential in nucleic acids, ATP, phospholipids, and cellular signaling, where it supports genetic information, metabolism, membranes, and regulation. Studying its transformations also helps explain nutrient cycling, soil fertility, and microbial decomposition in environmental systems.

Cited by 18 •

2014

Lake eutrophication is a water quality issue worldwide, making the need to identify and control nutrient sources critical. Laboratory determination of phosphorus release rates from sediment cores is a valuable approach for determining the role of internal phosphorus loading and guiding management decisions.

The Phosphorus Cycle

2019

Unlike carbon, water, and nitrogen, phosphorus is not present in the atmosphere as a gas. Instead, most phosphorus in the ecosystem exists as compounds, such as phosphate ions (PO43-), found in soil, water, sediment and rocks. Phosphorus is often a limiting nutrient (i.e., in short supply). Consequently, phosphorus is added to most agricultural fertilizers, which can cause environmental problems related to runoff in aquatic ecosystems. Biological Phosphorus Cycle Phosphorus is present in many...

Soil Nutrient Analysis: Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University In this experiment, three soil macronutrients are chemically extracted, combined with color-based reagents, then analyzed using color to determine the nutrient concentration present in the soil sample. Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are the main components of soil fertilizer. These methods isolate each nutrient from the soil into a solution that can be analyzed using turbidity and color to determine the...
