Orthogonal Arrays

Orthogonal arrays are structured experimental designs that organize combinations of multiple factors and levels so researchers can study effects efficiently with fewer experimental runs. In an orthogonal array, each factor level occurs equally often, and every pair of levels from different factors appears in a balanced pattern, allowing factor effects to be estimated independently with reduced confounding. In biology, these designs support optimization of culture conditions, assay parameters, drug concentrations, and other multivariable experiments when resources or sample numbers are limited. They help identify influential factors, compare conditions systematically, and guide follow-up experiments for process improvement or biological discovery.

Orthogonal Trajectories

2026

Orthogonal trajectories describe the geometric relationship between two families of curves that intersect each other at right angles. One illustrative case involves a family of parabolas that open sideways along the x-axis. These curves share a common shape but differ by a scaling parameter, resulting in a set of curves that all pass through the origin and widen at different rates.Determining Orthogonal TrajectoriesTo identify the orthogonal trajectories for these parabolas, the first step...

We developed and validated a small-footprint array of miniature chemostats built from readily available parts for low cost. Physiological and experimental evolution results were similar to larger volume chemostats. The ministat array provides a compact, inexpensive, and accessible platform for traditional chemostat experiments, functional genomics, and chemical screening applications.
