Viral Vaccine

A viral vaccine is a biological preparation that trains the immune system to recognize and defend against a specific virus before infection occurs. Depending on its formulation, it may contain an attenuated or inactivated virus, viral proteins, or genetic instructions that enable cells to produce viral antigens; these antigens stimulate adaptive immune responses, including antibodies and memory cells. Viral vaccines help prevent disease, reduce transmission and severity, and support population-level protection. Their development and study are central to biology, virology, immunology, and public health, while continued research improves vaccine safety, durability, and effectiveness against emerging viral variants.

Vaccinations

Overview Vaccination is the administration of antigenic material from pathogens to confer immunity against a specific microorganism. Vaccination primes the immune system to recognize and mount an immune response faster and more effectively if the real pathogen is encountered. Vaccinations are one of the most efficient ways to protect both individual humans and the general public from disease. A growing anti-vaccination skepticism risks the successes of vaccination programs that helped reduce...

Here, we present a protocol for synthesizing virus-like particles using either baculovirus or mammalian expression systems, and ultracentrifugation purification. This highly customizable approach is used to identify viral antigens as vaccine targets in a safe and flexible manner.

Intralymphatic Immunotherapy and Vaccination in Mice

Prophylactic and therapeutic vaccination often fails to stimulate strong immune responses due to week drainage of the vaccine to lymph nodes and consequently poor involvement of immune cells. By direct injection of vaccine to lymph nodes, so-called intralymphatic injection, vaccine efficacy can be strongly improved and vaccine doses can be reduced.

The video showcases a method to create cold-adapted recombinant influenza viruses. It involves transfecting human cells with bi-directional plasmids, followed by incubation at lower temperature incubation to yield viruses suitable for vaccine production, characterized by reduced replication in warmer conditions.
