Patiria Miniata

Patiria miniata, commonly called the bat star, is a marine echinoderm found along the Pacific coast of North America and is important for studying animal biology, development, and regeneration. Like other echinoderms, it has adult pentaradial symmetry, a water vascular system that operates tube feet through hydraulic pressure, and external fertilization that produces readily accessible embryos. Researchers use its embryos and larvae to examine fertilization, cleavage, cell specification, and the evolution of deuterostome development. Its ability to regenerate damaged arms also provides a valuable system for investigating tissue repair, organismal patterning, and the cellular mechanisms underlying regeneration.

Methods that produce morphant embryos are essential to study developmental mechanisms and gene regulatory networks. The sea star Patiria miniata is an emerging model system for these studies. Here we present a protocol for obtaining gametes, producing cultures of embryos, and rapid microinjection of zygotes from this species.
