Cellular Level

The cellular level is the scale of biological organization at which life processes occur within individual cells, the basic structural and functional units of organisms. At this level, cell membranes regulate exchange with the environment, organelles perform specialized tasks, and genetic information directs protein production, energy use, growth, and reproduction. Studying biology at the cellular level helps explain how cells communicate, maintain homeostasis, differentiate, and respond to stimuli. These principles support research into development, disease mechanisms, drug action, genetics, and biotechnology, linking molecular events to the functions of tissues, organs, and whole organisms.

Pyruvate Assay for Estimation of Pyruvate Levels in Cellular Fractions of Worms

2025

This video describes a colorimetric assay for quantitatively measuring pyruvate in the cellular fractions of Caenorhabditis elegans. Utilizing the hydrogen peroxide produced from the enzymatic reaction of pyruvate oxidase with cellular pyruvate, a chromogenic dye is oxidized to produce a colored product, measured using colorimetry to determine the pyruvate concentration.

To obtain high-resolution images of fluorescently labeled cells within large tissues, ideally, the biological samples should be imaged without sectioning. 3DISCO is a straightforward tissue clearing procedure based on sequential incubation with organic solvents. Upon clearing, the organs become transparent allowing an end-to-end laser scan of the specimen.

Owing to the opacity of soil, interactions between its constituent microbes cannot easily be visualised with cellular resolution. Here, two microfluidic tools are presented, which offer new opportunities for investigating fungal-microbial interactions. The devices are versatile and simple to use, enabling high spatiotemporal control and high-resolution imaging at the cellular level.
