Pepper Varieties

Pepper varieties are cultivated forms of pepper plants, especially Capsicum species, that differ in fruit shape, color, flavor, pungency, and growth characteristics. These differences arise from inherited genetic variation, including changes that regulate fruit development, pigment production, ripening, and capsaicinoid biosynthesis, the pathway responsible for heat in many peppers; environmental conditions can further influence these traits. Comparing pepper varieties helps biologists investigate plant genetics, domestication, evolution, and interactions between genotype and environment. This knowledge supports breeding programs that improve yield, nutritional value, disease resistance, and flavor while preserving genetic diversity in important food crops.

We provide a cost-effective and rapid molecular genotyping protocol that employs variety-specific PCR primers that target DNA sequence differences within the chloroplast trnL-F spacer region to differentiate between varieties of Imperata cylindrica (cogongrass) that cannot be distinguished by morphology alone. These varieties include the federally listed noxious weed, cogongrass and closely-related, wide-spread ornamental variety, I. cylindrica var. koenigii (Japanese blood grass).

Quantifying Environmental Microorganisms and Viruses Using qPCR

2023

Source: Laboratories of Dr. Ian Pepper and Dr. Charles Gerba - The University of Arizona Demonstrating Author: Bradley Schmitz Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), also known as real-time PCR, is a widely-used molecular technique for enumerating microorganisms in the environment. Prior to this approach, quantifying microorganisms was limited largely to classical culture-based techniques. However, the culturing of microbes from environmental samples can be particularly challenging, and...
