Peptide Fractionation

Peptide fractionation is the separation of complex peptide mixtures into simpler groups or individual components, an important step for analyzing protein structure and function in biology. It works by exploiting differences in peptide properties such as size, charge, hydrophobicity, or binding affinity, commonly through liquid chromatography, electrophoresis, or related separation methods. Fractionated samples reduce mixture complexity and improve the detection, identification, and quantification of peptides by mass spectrometry and other analytical techniques. These methods support proteomics, biomarker discovery, protein characterization, and purification workflows, helping researchers investigate biological pathways and compare changes in peptide composition across cells, tissues, or experimental conditions.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Nicholas Leadbeater — University of Connecticut Distillation is perhaps the most common laboratory technique employed by chemists for the purification of organic liquids. Compounds in a mixture with different boiling points separate into individual components when the mixture is carefully distilled. The two main types of distillation are "simple distillation" and "fractional distillation", and both are widely used in organic chemistry laboratories. Simple distillation...
