Phenotypic Profiling

Phenotypic profiling is the systematic measurement of observable cellular or organismal traits to characterize biological responses, identify functional changes, and distinguish experimental conditions. In biology, researchers often combine high-content imaging or multiplexed assays with computational analysis to quantify features such as cell morphology, growth, localization, and protein expression after genetic or chemical perturbation. Comparing these multidimensional profiles can reveal disease-associated phenotypes, classify compounds by mechanism of action, and identify unexpected effects that targeted assays may miss. The approach supports drug discovery, functional genomics, toxicology, and systems biology by linking complex biological states to underlying pathways and potential therapeutic strategies.

2019

A quantitative method has been developed to identify and predict the acute toxicity of chemicals by automatically analyzing the phenotypic profiling of Caenorhabditis elegans. This protocol describes how to treat worms with chemicals in a 384-well plate, capture videos, and quantify toxicological related phenotypes.

Expression Profiling with Microarrays

2023

Microarrays are important tools for profiling gene expression, and are based on complementary binding between probes that are attached to glass chips and nucleic acids derived from samples. Using these arrays, scientists can simultaneously evaluate the expression of thousands of genes. In addition, the expression profiles of different cells or tissue types can be compared, allowing researchers to deduce how the expression of different genes change during biological processes, and thus gain...
