Ping Pong Ball Throwing

Ping pong ball throwing is the controlled projection of a lightweight sphere using coordinated movements of the arm, hand, and body, making it a useful model for studying biological motion. The throw depends on muscle activation, joint rotation, grip and release timing, and the transfer of force through the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and fingers; air resistance and spin then influence the ball’s trajectory. In biology, analyzing this action helps researchers and students examine motor control, biomechanics, sensory feedback, and coordination. It can also support investigations of athletic performance, rehabilitation, and how the nervous system organizes precise, goal-directed movement.

Simulating Colonization and Extinction on Islands ExpandFind a table or desk with a cleared space of at least two meters in front of it in one direction. This will be the area where colonizer Ping-Pong balls are thrown into the island cups on the desk. Label six red cups from 1 - 6 with a permanent marker. Then label six blue cups in the same manner. Place the cups on the table with their top rims touching, and alternating between red and blue cups. This 12-cup set is a large island. Pour 100...
