Plant Growth

Plant growth is the increase in a plant’s size, biomass, and structural complexity through coordinated cell division, expansion, and differentiation. In meristems, actively dividing cells generate new tissues, while hormones such as auxin and gibberellins regulate cell expansion and developmental patterns; photosynthesis supplies carbohydrates, and roots absorb water and minerals needed for these processes. Studying plant growth helps explain how plants respond to light, temperature, nutrients, and environmental stress. This knowledge supports crop improvement, sustainable agriculture, forestry, and research on plant development, productivity, and adaptation to changing conditions.

Take an inoculum mixture of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria or PSB and purple non-sulfur bacteria or PNSB.Spray the mixture onto the soil mixed with fertilizer and cow dung manure.Sow the seed and cover it with the soil.Allow the plant to grow. The bacteria localize near the root in a zone called the rhizosphere.PSB converts insoluble soil phosphates into soluble forms.Meanwhile, PNSB fixes nitrogen by converting atmospheric nitrogen gas into ammonia. The plant absorbs the soluble phosphates and...

Meristems and Plant Growth

2026

Plants grow throughout their lives; this is called indeterminate growth, and it distinguishes plants from most animals. Although certain parts of plants stop growing (e.g., leaves and flowers), others grow continuously—like roots and stems. Indeterminate growth in plants is enabled by meristems, tissues containing undifferentiated cells—called meristematic cells. When meristematic cells divide, some daughter cells remain in the meristem, ensuring a steady supply of undifferentiated cells.

Growth of Medicago truncatula plants in symbiosis with the nitrogen-fixing bacteria Sinorhizobium meliloti in individual, sterile microcosms made from standard laboratory plates permits frequent examination of root systems and nodules without compromising sterility. Plants can be maintained in these growth chambers for up to 9 weeks.
