Plasma Centrifugation

Plasma centrifugation is a laboratory technique that separates plasma from cellular components in blood, supporting analysis of circulating proteins, metabolites, and other biological factors. After blood is collected, often with an anticoagulant, centrifugation generates centrifugal force that separates materials according to density, leaving plasma as the upper liquid layer above concentrated red and white blood cells; spin speed and duration influence the separation and platelet content. Researchers and clinicians use the resulting plasma for biochemical testing, disease investigation, biomarker measurement, and preparation of platelet-rich or platelet-poor fractions. Standardized processing helps preserve sample quality and improve the reliability of biological measurements.

Source: Robert M. Rioux & Suprita Jharimune, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Earth's gravitational force is capable of separating heterogeneous mixtures. However, many systems avert this type of separation owing to the length of time usually required in such cases. Centrifugation is one of the most powerful tools for the separation of heterogeneous mixtures1. It involves the application of centripetal force for sedimentation of the heavier phase, leading to separation of...

Centrifugation is a separation technique based on differences in density or size. It is commonly used to separate solids from aqueous interferents. During centrifugation, the sample is placed in centrifugation tubes and spun at high angular velocity, which allows centrifugal force to act differentially on the different densities or masses of the components. After spinning, the supernatant liquid is decanted. Depending on the specific application, either the pellet or the supernatant is retained...

An Introduction to the Centrifuge

The centrifuge is an instrument used in nearly every research lab across the globe. Centrifugation is the process by which a centrifuge is used to separate components of a complex mixture. By spinning laboratory samples at very high speeds, the components of a given mixture are subjected to centrifugal force, which causes more dense particles to migrate away from the axis of rotation and lighter ones to move toward it. These particles can sediment at the bottom of the tube into what’s...
