Rabbit Eye Surgery

Rabbit eye surgery refers to operative procedures performed on the ocular tissues of rabbits to treat disease, study eye function, or evaluate ophthalmic interventions. Under appropriate anesthesia and aseptic conditions, the surgeon exposes the target structure, makes a controlled incision or other tissue modification, completes the planned repair or treatment, and closes or protects the site while monitoring recovery. In biology, these procedures support research on ocular anatomy, wound healing, inflammation, drug delivery, and surgical techniques because the rabbit eye provides a practical model for selected aspects of human eye disease. Careful technique and welfare monitoring are essential for reliable, ethically obtained results.

Retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) replacement strategies and gene-based therapy are considered for several retinal degenerative conditions. For clinical translation, large eye animal models are required to study surgical techniques applicable in patients. Here we present a rabbit model for subretinal surgery geared towards RPE transplantation, which is versatile and cost-efficient.
