Rat Ear Tissue

Rat ear tissue is the collection of specialized biological structures forming the external, middle, and inner ear of the rat, making it a useful model for studying anatomy, sensory biology, and tissue organization. Its components include skin, connective tissue, cartilage, bone, sensory epithelia, and neural pathways that transmit or process sound and support balance through mechanical and cellular signaling. Researchers examine rat ear tissue using dissection, histology, microscopy, and molecular analysis to investigate development, hearing, vestibular function, tissue injury, and disease. These studies can clarify mammalian ear biology and support evaluation of experimental treatments for hearing or balance disorders.

Source: Richard Glickman-Simon, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Public Health and Community Medicine, Tufts University School of Medicine, MA This video describes the examination of the ear, beginning with a review of its surface and interior anatomy (Figure 1). The cartilaginous auricle consists of the helix, antihelix, earlobe, and tragus. The mastoid process is positioned just behind the earlobe. The slightly curving auditory canal ends at the tympanic membrane, which transmits sound...

Isolating LacZ-expressing Cells from Mouse Inner Ear Tissues using Flow Cytometry

Flow cytometry is a powerful tool allowing for the isolation and study of specific cell populations. This protocol describes steps for isolating LacZ-expressing cells from cochlear tissues from neonatal transgenic mice. Dissociated cochlear cells were labeled using fluorescent-conjugated substrates of β-galactosidase prior to separation via flow cytometry.

Here we demonstrate a method for inducing and recording the progress of a delayed type-hypersensitivity (DTH) reaction in the rat ear. This is followed by a demonstration of the preparation of rat ear tissue for two-photon imaging of the effector / memory T cell response.
