Receptor Expression

Receptor expression is the production and display of receptor proteins by cells, determining how they detect and respond to hormones, neurotransmitters, growth factors, or other signals. It depends on regulated gene transcription and translation, followed by protein folding, transport, and placement in the cell membrane or other cellular compartments; signaling conditions can increase or decrease receptor abundance and activity. In biology, measuring receptor expression helps explain cell communication, differentiation, and tissue function. It also supports disease research and therapeutic development by identifying altered signaling pathways, predicting drug responses, and guiding the design of receptor-targeted treatments.

Olfactory receptor activation patterns encode odor identity, but the lack of published data identifying odorant ligands for mammalian olfactory receptors hinders the development of a comprehensive model of odor coding. This protocol describes a method to facilitate high-throughput identification of olfactory receptor ligands and quantification of receptor activation.
